Is this category for equipment that goes in the Secondary Equipment slot?

Symbols can be equipped in the Secondary and Ranged slot. it's used to seperate it from the ranged weapons, and shields. -- User:Chillispike  User_talk:Chillispike 08:30, January 10, 2014 (UTC)

Ok, I've been trying to organize the Icons lately.

I think it would make sense to include the Symbols Icons category as a subcategory of both Secondary Icons Category and Ranged Icons Category in this case. Jado818 (talk) 15:28, January 10, 2014 (UTC)

I noticed something today after I finished the Stein of Moggok HQ. The symbols equipment category doesn't seem to exist any more in game. The Stein was listed as secondary / ranged and not symbols like the old image shows.

I went and looked on the broker under equipment types and wasn't able to find any reference to symbols anywhere. I would suggest that we renam this category to Secondary Icons. To match the secondary equipment slot. The Bow icon category could probably also be renamed to Ranged Icons and then split into throwing / focus / bow subcategories as well. It still exists in game, I just took a look at the stein and another secondary/ranged item and it says Symbols twice on the examine (once on a line of its own and once next to 'Type' above the slots line. Basically symbols are second/ranged slot things that aren't shields and aren't bows or throwing weapons. Given that (and given that ideally icons on the wiki will be one day replaced by using icons from the API) I don't see any reason this category should change. --lordebon (talk) 01:14, January 17, 2014 (UTC)

ahh, I was talking about equipment slot, the symbols is still a type yes. I probably should write out what I was thinking fully so it's coherent.

I was thinking it would make sense if the equipment icons were organized by equipment slot. Then each icon slot category could be subdivided into the types.

Like a Ranged Slot category could have (which would make more sense than putting all the ranged icons under a Bow category)

  • Bow Icons
  • Throwing Icons
  • Focus Icons

or a Secondary Slot Icons category could have

  • Shield Icons
  • Symbols Icons
  • Tome Icons

It wouldn't take much changing to arrange it in that manner, mostly just adding the current category to equipment slot Icon category and then subdividing appropriate images. Basically make it easier to narrow down which equipment slot and type of icon you are looking for.

Could possibly do primary slot icons also then have subcategories

  • Axe
  • Staff / Club
  • Sword
  • Dagger
  • Hammer / Maul
  • etc

Something that can be equipped in multiple slots could just take that Icon for multiple categories, like the stein icon could be tagged symbols, secondary, ranged.

I'm not sure what the intention for the API is, but I don't mind doing work even if it is eventually replaced by a better solution later on. I'm hoping to arrange the Icons to make them easier to use and I won't be upset if a new awesome system replaces my efforts here. I just hate waiting around for something that may never happen. I don't have an issue with having the extra categories of ranged and secondary (and even primary) icons, since you're still keeping the existing organization by what they look like/are (axe, symbols, etc). One thing to consider if you add them is symbols are both secondary and ranged and so would have to fall under both categories.
As for the API, there's two sort of aspects.
  • The first is that all the EQ2 item icons are hosted online by SOE and can be called using the API if you know the icon # (which can be looked up via a query to the API). I want to convert our item templates to use that so that we don't have to deal with uploading icons manually and not being able to find them and thus having duplicates. I need to do a bit of base-work, namely generating blank background 'clouds' for each rarity since the SOE icons are only the foreground with transparent background. Once that's done it's relatively easy to drop the code in.
  • The second, more tedious aspect is setting up a system to fully generate wiki-text for an item by pulling data from the API. Basically all of an item's stats are fields in the API that we can pull from, it's just a matter of setting up code on an external site to read the API for an item and do all the conversion into our appropriate wiki-text. Uberfuzzy had a partially working example version at one point. The end result would be basically you type in an item name or id, pick the item you want (if you had multiple matches), and then it spits out ready-to-go wikitext that a user would then paste right into the wiki page without having to edit all the fields manually, saving a huge amount of time. Potentially it could be extended to run on a bot, but that's a stretch goal that I haven't even looked at yet. --lordebon (talk) 17:20, January 17, 2014 (UTC)
