Food is required in Norrath. If you don't have food, your health regen will be very, very slow.
Food is divided up into tiers, based on the resource tier which is used to make the food. Tier 1 foods are level 10, tier 2 foods are level 20, and so on.
The amount of health regen provided by food is capped by your adventuring level. Tier 3 foods (for example) provide 53 health regen per tick. However, to get the full effect, you have to have an adventuring level of 21 or higher. If you are level 11-20, examining the food will show that it only provides 28 health regen per tick. If you are level 1-10, examining the food will show that it only provides 10 health regen per tick.
